Wacky Races!

June 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Even before the start of the race, the commentators called it the ultimate Wacky Races, and they were absolutely spot on! If there was ever a list of the best ways to crash out of a race, Lewis Hamilton will be the undisputed leader! The incident is supposedly under investigation, it was clearly Hamilton’s mistake and it’ll be interesting to see if he incurs any sort of a penalty.

Once that piece of drama was done and over with, it was clearly BMW’s day. A lot of history being made, with BMW’s first victory as a constructor, first victory also for Peter Sauber who remains on the team as an advisor, first victory for Robert Kubica and first victory by a Pole. Also I think it’s only the second time a team has managed a 1-2 with their first victory. Jordan did that back in 1998 Belgian GP with Damon Hill and Ralf Schumacher.

To say that Kubica won because of the incident after the first pit stop would be a little unfair, especially after those consecutive flying laps he did to open up the gap from Heidfeld. In the post-race interview he said it was like doing 7 qualifying laps one after the other. In the end that proved crucial as he came out of his second pit stop in the lead. One year after his horrific crash on the same track, this is surely a victory he’ll never forget.

Behind him and Heidfeld, DC got his first podium in over 2 years. A very un-eventful race, by his standards! A lot of questions were being asked about his future in F1, especially after his interesting comments about NASCAR recently. So this result comes at just the right time for him.

A wonderful race also by Massa, although I still don’t quite understand why Ferrari didn’t manage to put enough fuel in his car and had to bring him back. But the way he overtook both Kovalainen and Barichello in a single move, that was amazing!

It was very unfortunate for Ferrari the way Raikkonen went out, because he had overtaken Hamilton in the pits and could have even gone on to win the race, but at least Massa’s 4 points will give them something to cheer about. They still lead the Constructors’ Championship, although only by 3 points now. The Drivers’ Championship looks very interesting now with Kubica leading by 4 points, Massa and Hamilton tied for second and Raikkonen 3 points behind them. Of course, more than half of the season is still left, but I think we are all set for another nail-biting finish this year.

It was funny to hear Trulli immediately come up with excuses when he was told that Massa was closing in on him in the final laps. In the end I think he got a bit lucky because he lost the position because of his teammate’s mistake. I felt bad for Rosberg who looked really good and set for lots of points before he also managed to miss the red lights at the pit exit. Sad day also for Renault, with neither of their cars finishing. But at least Nelsinho Piquet showed us that F1 cars do indeed have a reverse gear!

There will no doubt be lots of partying in Germany, in Switzerland and in Poland. And time for me to go get some lunch.
