It’s incredible that two players from two entirely different sports could compete and motivate each other, but in an attempt to become the greatest in their respective sport, before the other one does, Woods and Federer are doing exactly the same. Federer is obviously chasing Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slams, while Woods is closing in on Nicklaus’ 18 Majors. And by the way things are going in the tennis world, time is running out for Woods!
I feel bad about not being able to watch the US Open final today, maybe I’ll catch a recording later.. but what an incredible match it must have been! Djokovic is definitely one to watch out for in the coming years..
If you are like me and didn’t know much about him until about a week ago, a quick look at the ATP Race standings will tell the whole story! As of now, Federer leads (finally!) with 1171 points, followed closely by Nadal at 1012. That those two are so close is hardly surprising. In fact, until the start of US Open, Nadal was actually leading the race. Of course, he did play 4 more tournaments.. But anyway, look a little further down and there is Djokovic just around 200 points behind Nadal! 4th placed Davydenko is way behind..
Maybe Djokovic couldn’t keep up with Federer tonight, but clearly he is much better than the rest of the world, and fast catching up with the top 2. And he’s only 20, so in 3-4 years by the time Federer retires, both Djokovic and Nadal will be well in their prime. Another wonderful rivalry in making!? As far as I remember, I have never seen Djokovic play.. I guess I’ll have to rectify that soon enough.
Back to Federer chasing Sampras’ record, he’s now only 2 behind, and there is wide speculation that he could achieve that next year with his 6th consecutive Wimbledon.. or perhaps his very first French?! Only time will tell..
